I thought the whole lemmings thing was kinda interesting. The book Mrs Cheng used was so adorable I couldn't help but smile at the furry pictures :P But don't ask me what happened after that, I totally drifted off. Bleargh. I'm just being honest here :) Anyway the whole concept of individualism and assertiveness was well highlighted in the story, and I think the lemmings alone would suffice for Mrs Cheng imparting her pearls of wisdom to us. No need to go into the lengthy thingy.. just my 2 cents

hey yups, didn't think that the lemming story was much of a use either. I think more needs to be developed from it? Still, I liked the story. I didn't know that there were animals that like to commit suicide. And I didn't know that these crazy animals looked so cute too. Anyway, I guess the whole analogy of the Lemming Dilemma would be more applicable to students if we looked at it in more detail. It doesn't necessarily apply to just leaders alone, but to anyone in general. The whole reactive vs. creative thing provides some food for thought:)

From this moment, everything i type here is going to be as truthful as I possibly can be and what I say might also represent the opinion's of certain few.
=) hehe.
I can't deny the fact that the Lemmings story was pretty entertaining and funny, especially since Mrs Cheng chose to use a book with cute pictures.
The story did bring across certain useful ideas but i feel that Mrs Cheng should have made it a lil clearer on the objectives of the whole leadership talk thing 'cause i do feel that some people didn't really understand what was going on or what the whole point of the talk was. I'm not making this up really 'cause if u just looked around u see people not bothering to listen. some people i know didn't even understand how all the purpose in life thing had anythin to do with leadership. so yep, i think maybe the talk would haf been even more effective if Mrs Cheng tried to make things a lil clearer..to the audience..maybe?
yup, but on the whole i really thought the story was cute. Ha. Damn lemmings jumping off the cliff.

haha people. i refused to believe that lemmings really do exist so i went to surf around on the net and found these.. there really are lemmings!! :|
claim:
during the filming of the 1958 disney nature documentary white wilderness, the film crew induced lemmings into jumping off a cliff and into the sea in order to document their supposedly suicidal behavior.
status:
true.
origins:
lemming suicide is fiction. contrary to popular belief, lemmings do not periodically hurl themselves off cliffs and into the sea. cyclical explosions in population do occasionally induce lemmings to attempt to migrate to areas of lesser population density. when such a migration occurs, some lemmings die by falling over cliffs or drowning in lakes or rivers. these deaths are not deliberate "suicide" attempts, however, but accidental deaths resulting from the lemmings' venturing into unfamiliar territories and being crowded and pushed over dangerous ledges. in fact, when the competition for food, space, or mates becomes too intense, lemmings are much more likely to kill each other than to kill themselves...

lemmings.
is this fo real?
i felt that the speech the speaker provided was an enriching one in that it taught me the importance of self leadership, in the sense that you have to know that you are not following someone blindly, and that there is a need to have a purpose and end in mind before u can actually lead other people. This reminds me of one of Stephen Covey's 7 habits of highly effective people, which is to begin with the end in mind.
youkai.

hey people please start writing reflections on Mrs Cheng's speech about the lemmings. :) a few lines also can. thank you!!

the nj journey
expected student outcome students are to be aware and reflective of how all activities which take place in college have impact on the person they become.
activity
- time taken be given during civics period to reflect on either, their lessons, cca, talks, people they have come into contact with, etc and think about these along the lines of college core values.
- every term will focus on a specific core value and there will be a key event associated with it.
- students should do reflections on these. they can do it in groups.
- they should also put in their reflection on attachments, etc.
- journals should be as personalized as possible.
suggested procedure
- students should start their journal writing their hopes and their dreams.
- they should be encouraged to put in poems, pictures, song lyrics, anything they find inspirational.
- encourage them to get friends, teachers, or their parents to write short notes to them in their journal or to give responses to their entry.
- this should be a 2 year journey of discovery and this is the spirit in which the journey should be taken.
